Blastocystis sp vacuolar form from chicken faeces. (EM by Deb Stenzel). This is the form found in culture or passed from the colon and was at first thought to be the typical form but they are not the forms present in the colon. Blastocystis sp. infections are common in birds - they differ from other Blastocystis spp in that the nucleus does not have a crescentic band of chromatin but has spots/ blocks of condensed chromatin. Blastocystis occurs in many animals including invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals including humans. It is not known if it is a zoonosis; Blastocystis may consist of several different species with distinct host ranges. Currently Blastocystis in humans is referred to as Blastocystis hominis and in other hosts as Blastocystis spp.
